ARE YOU HERE IN AUGUST?! WHY!!! Just kidding. Good news is you have NYC basically to yourself. New Yorker's flee to the Hampton's and the shore on weekends so enjoy the not-so-long lines! There are tons of fun, tasty and relaxing summer hot spots to check out before the hungry New Yorker's come back.
Let's talk Poke (Poh-kay). what is it? Its a raw fish salad that got ton's of buzz in LA and now New Yorker's have gone all fish-eyed for it. Where's the best in town? Wisefish, Chelsea. The lines can get crazy but go on a off-hour. (ie, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm)
Now that I've got your mind on the water, why not go on a FREE hudson river cruise and enjoy buckets of beer and buttery lobster rolls. The North River Lobster Co, aka the lobsta boat, departs every hour and cruises the hudson for 40 mins and returns. Stay for one ride, or enjoy multiple... FOR FREE! I promise your pics of the skyline will be on pointe. Here are the sailing times .
Sip on some cold brew or the trailblazer of coffee drinks..a Draught latte. La Colombe claims to be the first to serve such a drink and it is delish. Frothed milk + Cold pressed espresso. Heavenly in this heat!
Enjoy and Stay Cool!
The return of the choker. It's not quite the tattoo choker nod to the 90's we saw make it's comeback last year but a more sophisticated style. It's partner in crime the "Bolo" is selling out on sites like Nasty Gal. If you attended Coachella Bolo's were a must have. Want to try out this trend? My favorite are these by LA designer Vanessa Mooney.
Give them the cold shoulder ladies. It's romantic, fresh and sexy in a demure way.
GO LONG! Take your earrings to new lengths this spring. Pair's perfect with those off the shoulder tops. I like these from Babblebar.
How are you wearing the 2016 color of the year? (I'm looking at you Rose Quartz).Try combining it with another super trend, block heels. This shoe serves as a fun update to your neutrals. Shop it at Modcloth.
In honor of Valentine's Day, let's do a little sweet talkin. If you're like me and you have a supersized sweet tooth, whenever traveling to a new city, you search for the best local and delicious treats. For all my sugar loving gals out there.... Here are a few of my go to's!
william Greenberg bakery has the best black and white cookie in the city. I repeat, the best black and white cookie in the city. even Oprah says so.
A lot of awesome doughnuts in NYC but the doughnut plant in chelsea has always been #1 in my book. yummy flavors and adorable decor.
Heres one a little off the beaten path, but a well known secret to any sweet savy new yorker. The chinatown icecream factory has some serious cult followers for their delicious flavors like almond cookie and black sesame.
It doesn't get much dreamier than this cup of chocolate heaven. The city bakery even has a hot chocolate month (Going on Now) where it offers over 20 unique flavors. Bonus = homemade marshmallows!
I love the Vosges haut chocolat soho store. It basically looks like my own personal heaven. purple, sparkly and packed full of chocolate.
I was beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to shop with Shawna and Keifer Thompson of Thompson Square behind the scenes in the garment district for their upcoming tour outfits!
The day began with several appointments inside designers showrooms. I selected and matched their style, taste and budget to Shop with Rox participating designers. The first designer we visited for Shawna has a beautiful collection with a feminine yet edgy feel, which is exactly how Shawna describes her style. She looked absolutely stunning in a gun metal gray textured dress and show-stopping trench coat. I cannot wait to see these pieces on stage!
With Keifer, we visited a custom shirt maker who has been in the business for nearly 30 years. Carl has designed for the likes of Bradley Cooper, Aaron Nevel and many, many more. Together we selected fabrics that fit Keifer's style and needs for the tour. Keifer also picked out a shirt made by my friends over at Teddy Stratford (the best fitting shirt on the planet).
During our shopping, it was heartwarming to hear the story of how these two met and began their journey together in Nashville. Loved the fact that I could share this day and be a small part of the creative process with them. You'll love to know they are supporting garments being made here in NYC! Fans can rest assured.. they looked amazing in everything! Can't wait for action shots!
It's time to have a conversation with your clothing, shoes and accessories. We are all guilty of keeping things too long but let's discuss the main offenders, shall we?
Hold each piece of your closet close to your chest and ask yourself if...
1) All four seasons have come and gone without you even thinking of putting it on. (Yeah? Then it's time to say goodbye.)
2) You don’t picture yourself giving this item to your daughter/son one day and it's still stuffed in the back of the closet.
3) You don't see yourself using it down the road for a costume piece (i.e. a fabulous beaded dress, a hat, an outta sight1970’s jumper). This applies to those wacky thrift store finds you just had to have. (I have a few!) Some of them are worth saving...but most need to go.
4) ...If it has ever fit properly. Chances are it never will. And if it ever does, you'll likely not want it so badly any more. (Trust me on this one.) When you put something on, you know instantly if it makes you feel great. If you're questioning, snap a photo, wait a few days, and take a second look. Or snap a selfie from the fitting room and enlist an honest friend. Or me.
5) Skinny jeans? (Ohhh, skinny jeans.) Funny thing about skinny jeans: There's always a little budge with them...but when pushed past their limits? They'll most certainly let you know (and show it). Put down the jeans you've been waiting squeeze into for the last three years. Put down the jeans that you got at such a great price that you're feeling guilty about letting 'em go. Find a pair that makes you look great TODAY and not someday. (Some of the best advice I've ever gotten is that "Someday" is not a day of the week. Truth.)
6) Stained or damaged items? Wine stains don't get better over time. Let. It. Go.
So, Rox...What to do with the clothing I don’t want?
Try Poshmark. A fantastic app that helps you sell used clothing.
Hit consignment stores. I like Second Time Around.
Need cash now? Try your luck at Beacon's Closet if you live in NYC.
Have professional clothing to donate? I like Dress for Success.
Put the winter clothes elsewhere.
Make the switch and showcase seasonal items (here in NYC, that means spring/summer) in your closet so you see them. If you see the items in plan view you are more likely to actually wear them.
Place thick and heavy winter clothing in space bags!
Try something new.
Place your jewelry on display. You are more likely to accessorize if you have different options in front of you. Creative ideas here.
Two words. Huggable huggers. They're affordable and they save so much space. Get them here.
Color coordinating your closet is a FANTASTIC way to really see what you have! Create a “shop”-like feel when you open the closet!
Eliminate frantic searching for “that one white blouse.”
See where your wardrobe is lacking and what your shopping patterns are. Do you have SEVEN similar black tops but only really wear two? Do you look great in green but only own ONE green "fancy" dress? Take note of what you feel you're missing or what you have way too much of.
Seeing all your options clearly can make styling a little more fun! You’ll be amazed at what you find after a little spring cleaning.
Turn up the tunes. Pour yourself some wine. Get to it and have fun!
(Psssst. Watch out for my next post on key pieces to purchase to improve your wardrobe!)
